  • In U16, tore his MCL - supposed to be out 8 weeks, tried to return after 4 weeks, re-injured it, then missed 6 additional weeks. Missing 10 weeks of season, still was told to expect to be drafted between rounds 8 to 12 but went un-drafted to OHL.

Instructing Career:

  • While Mike doesn't have the extensive playing resume to boast like others, what separates him when it comes to instructing & coaching is his ability to both demonstrate and teach skills and hockey IQ.

  • Countless players drafted to the OHL (including the 2024 OHL 1st overall pick), committed to NCAA, and a few to the NHL. Multiple Team Canada athletes who competed at the Youth Olympics, U17 World Championships, U18 Women's Championships & invited to Women's National Team Camp.

Coaching Career:

  • 12 seasons coaching at the AAA level, 1 season assistant coach at Jr A level.

As Head Coach from U14 to U16, the team went 175-25-10 overall, finishing top 3 in all of Ontario each season, with PSI ranking them #1 in North America in U16. In regular season play, the team went 23-0-2 in U14,    32-0 in U15 (also winning all 3 tournaments attended: Toronto Red Wings Early Bird, Toronto Marlboros Holiday Classic, and Oakville Winter Classic), and 31-1-1-1 in U16, also winning the 2024 OHL Cup (becoming only the 5th OMHA team to ever do it and only the 2nd Oakville team to accomplish it), having 12 players drafted to the OHL from the team with 1 player committed to Boston College NCAA Division 1 during U16 season.

  • Currently, Mike is the Head Coach of the U18 AAA Oakville Rangers for the 2025-2026 season.

Ryan DeRenzis

Head Instructor

Playing Career:

  • Ryan started at the AAA level in Oakville, then spent 1 season at the AA level in Oakville, before then heading to the GTHL where he returned to the AAA level playing U13 & U14 for the Mississauga Reps and U15 & U16 for the Toronto Jr Canadians, who finished top 2 in Ontario both seasons, making it to the semi-finals of the OHL Cup in U16.

  • Following minor hockey, Ryan played one season of U18 AAA for the Oakville Rangers, winning the OMHA's and getting to the OHF Championships. He then moved on to Jr where he spent seasons in Jr B with Ancaster and Jr A with the Oakville Blades. Eventually, a re-occurring injury ended his playing time, and it opened the gate for coaching & skill instruction.

Instructing Career:

  • Ryan has worked as an instructor with First Star Hockey since 2017.

  • Like Mike, Ryan may not have the extensive "pro-playing" resume to boast like some others in the industry, but his knowledge of the game, passion to teach and ability to connect with the players are what make Ryan an elite instructor in the GTA.

  • Ryan has been instrumental since 2018 in working with many players drafted to the OHL (including the 2024 OHL 1st overall pick) and committed to the NCAA. As well as multiple Team Canada athletes who competed at the Youth Olympics, U17 World Championships, U18 Women's Championships & invited to Women's National Team Camp

Coaching Career:

  • Ryan has been an Assistant Coach alongside Mike at the AAA level every year since 2017, which include a season at U16 with the 2003 AAA Oakville Rangers and 6 seasons from U11 to U16 with the 2008 AAA Oakville Rangers.

  • Currently, Ryan is a Co-Head Coach with the 2013 AAA Oakville Rangers at the U13 level for the 2025-2026 season.
